Getting up in the morning can be the most difficult part of the day. Resisting the urge to hit the snooze button for the third time can be a daily battle, and not the best way to start your day. Wanting to stay in bed for an extra 20 minutes doesn’t make you lazy, but there are a few easy tips to follow so that getting up will be just a little bit easier!
If your alarm is within arms reach, it’s tempting hit snooze and indulge in an extra 20 minutes of sleep. Put your alarm clock on the opposite side of the room, recommends Registered Nurse John Bortscher. This forces you to walk across the room to shut off the alarm. Walking increases blood flow, which helps you wake up.
Registered Nurse Megan Towle-O’Leary suggests putting a glass of water at your bedside. “As soon as your alarm goes off, drink it. The body may become slightly dehydrated during the night and a glass of water will help revitalize.”
If you find yourself sleeping through your alarm, maybe it’s time to get a new one! Our bodies can get used to the sound and fail to recognize it as a wake-up call after awhile. Towle-O’Leary also suggests setting your alarm to play your favourite song – this can help you wake up and face the day in a good mood!
Bortscher also suggests to switch out daily coffee for an apple, as it is proven to be more energizing in the morning!
Try joining a sports team or getting involved in any physical activities during the day. Not only will this help you sleep better, but you also will feel better overall!
Your body wakes up at a lower temperature, so turn on a fan or open some windows to keep you alert in the morning hours says Towle-O’Leary.
Very helpful!
I am definitely number in need of number three. I don't even hear my alarm clock anymore and then I'm late for school! Definitely setting out to find a new one, thanks!
Useful tips
I know that I have lots of trouble waking up in the morning... I always tell myself "five more minutes" as I hit snooze on my alarm... five minutes turns into twenty and I'm rushing around the house, desperately trying to get to school on time. I will definitely put some of these tips into action.
