Lovely Locks and Terrific Tresses: Grad Hair Trends for 2013

From fun and flirty to refined and elegant, Youthink shares four hairstyle suggestions to help you complete your 2013 grad look.

Grad night – the final curtain call for all high-school seniors, and the evening for every Grade 12 girl to get dolled up in a stunning dress and awe the crowd with her beauty. The dress, the shoes and the makeup are all complete, but one essential part of the ensemble is missing: the hair! Choosing the perfect hairstyle that fits your personality is imperative to accomplishing the look you want for grad. From fun and flirty to refined and elegant, here are four hairstyle suggestions that could easily be the pièce de résistance to your 2013 grad ensemble.

Grad Hairstyle 1: Long Waves

Cascading locks are a gorgeous way to give your hair shape and volume. Long loose waves of curls flowing over bare shoulders is a stunning look for any strapless dress, but this look is beautiful when matched with a myriad of other dress cuts as well. Moreover, this hairstyle is extremely versatile. You can wear this look with bangs, no bangs, a middle part or a side part. Whichever you decide, you’ll want to stock up on volumizing foam and a “flexible hold” hairspray to ensure your tumbling tresses remain buoyant all night.

Grad Hairstyle 2: French Twist

The French twist is an elegant and effortless way to polish off your grad appearance. With hair pulled up, the French twist will complement any face shape, from oval to heart-shaped. It’s a look that works best with long- to medium-length hair, however, with enough hairspray and bobby pins, girls with shorter hair will be able to pull this hairstyle off as well. Dress it up with an ornate clip. Want to be a little more daring? Play off the retro look that is all the rage this season by adding a 60’s-style bouffant to the front of your ’do.

Grad Hairstyle 3: French Braid

Oh, mon chérie! The French really do know how to devise exquisite hairstyles. The French braid is a well-known everyday hairdo, but like many other basic hairstyles it can be dressed up for special occasions. That was certainly made clear on the runways at Marchesa, Hervé Léger and The Row earlier this season – braids weaved, criss-crossed and twisted every which way for looks that were both soft and striking. Word to the wise: You’ll want to enlist the help of a friend or stylist to aid you in bringing this hairstyle together.

Grad Hairstyle 4: Curly Bob

This ’do is for the girls with shorter or medium-length hair. Embrace your inner starlet with a look that is red carpet-worthy, but totally uncomplicated. Take your inspiration from the 90’s grunge scene for tousled, my-hair-isn’t-really-done curls, or opt for a more romantic and youthful look with tighter coils. YouTube has excellent video tutorials by various fashion gurus and stylists keen to share their step-by-step instructions for creating beautiful hairstyles – and makeup looks too.

Great tips.

Leaving your hair down is a bit bland and boring, especially on a day such as The Grad Day! Great tips on these unique hairstyles :)
