Ten Reasons to Watch Superbowl XLVI

The Superbowl is arguably the biggest spectacle in all of sports.

One of the biggest sporting events of the year is coming up this Sunday, February 5th. The National Football League will wrap up another entertaining season with the New England Patriots and the New York Giants battling it out in front of millions of fans for the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy. The best thing about this game is, whether you’re a football fan or not there’s something in the Superbowl for everyone! Here are 10 reasons why you should be watching the big game on Sunday.

1. Funny commercials

As millions of people tune in to watch the big game, the best commercials in the business will be competing for air time. This means you’ll be watching only well-made and often hilarious advertisements that will keep you entertained between plays. Although in Canada we don't always get to see the best ones until after the game on the Internet, if you have a great TV package you'll be treated to creative spots like Honda’s witty reenactment of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off with Matthew Broderick and Volkswagen’s The Dog Strikes Back – a funny spoof on their infamous Darth Vader themed ad from last year’s game.

2. Halftime show

This year at halftime pop legend Madonna will be performing songs from her upcoming album in what is sure to be a spectacular show. Joining her on stage are the always entertaining Nicki Minaj and MIA, likely to sing along to Madonna’s anticipated new single, Give Me All Your Luvin'.

3. Superbowl parties

On Superbowl Sunday, fans everywhere will come together to watch the game. It’s fun to get excited and root for a team with a group of friends, so if no one you know is planning a Superbowl party, host one yourself! It will make your big-game experience a memorable one.

4. Celebs in the stands

Thousands of people come out to watch the Superbowl, and that includes celebrities. You’re sure to spot your favourite stars on TV at some point during the game. There will also be famous talk show hosts and reporters roaming around in the stands shooting gameday segments, including the hilarious Jimmy Fallon, who’s in-game commentary and post-game special will make the day all the more entertaining.

5. The game

It’s the Superbowl, meaning the best two teams in the NFL will be battling it out on the field - a true clash of the titans. We’re talking enormous, muscular men, playing a game so full of strategy, it may as well be a small war. Whether you like football or not, it’s the best quality football game you’ll see all year, and an amazing spectacle of both athleticism and strategy.

6. Cheerleaders

If you’re not a football fan, there’s another show for you happening right on the field throughout the game: cheerleading. Though 2011’s Superbowl excluded cheerleading, the NFL has brought it back for this year’s game, and the New England Patriots’ cheerleading squad will be there with a routine that is sure to feature Superbowl–worthy dance moves and incredible gymnastics.

7. All the food

Superbowl snacks are truly a phenomenon, with people everywhere creating tasty dishes specifically for game day. Chips and salsa, nachos and chicken wings are among more popular snack choices, but why not try making a unique meal of your own? You could play up classic finger foods or even plan a whole Superbowl themed feast – either way, it’s one more thing to look forward to on Sunday.

8. National anthem

Every year, one of America’s best singers is chosen to sing the American national anthem. This year it’s Kelly Clarkson. Her spectacular voice alone is reason enough to tune in to the game!

9. Sense of community

Even to people outside of the U.S, the excitement of the game is infectious and brings a real sense of community. With millions of people all watching the game, you’ll feel part of something greater, and what’s more, you’ll be in the loop on Monday at school when everybody is talking about it! The Superbowl is so much more than just a football game – it’s one enormous party that you’ll be glad you didn't miss!

10. The last big sporting event

With the winter sports season coming to a close, the Superbowl will be the last major sporting event for a while (until the Stanley Cup, that is), so enjoy it!
