It’s August 12th! Which means that in less than a month, I will be halfway across the country (3553km, in fact), waiting to move into my dorm at Carleton University. I said in my last entry that I hope that this blog will help you all to realize that going to university isn’t a scary experience, but if we can be honest for a few seconds here… I’m seriously terrified.
I’ve never lived away from home, never had to function without parents for more than two weeks, and I’ve never had to share a room with someone I’ve never met before! But hey, it’s all a part of the experience, right?
Once I’m actually settled into the whole University thing in September, Campus Chronicles will be a bit more personal and hopefully, far more entertaining for my dear readers. But in the meantime, I’m going to throw down some details about myself and what I’ll be up to next year…
Like my bio says, I wrote for Youthink throughout high school, and I don’t think I ever did a piece outside of the music section. That was perfectly fine with me, since I’ve always been a big music person. Okay, that’s the understatement of the year. Music is pretty much synonymous with my identity. It’s a passion of mine and has been for years. Because music, and writing about music, is such a huge part of my life, I have chosen to minor in Music for my Journalism degree. I know that the chance of a career in music journalism actually paying the bills is pretty slim, but for right now, my dream job would be an editorial position at SPIN Magazine. That’s where I’d like to be headed, and it’s going to take a long time to get there, but my four years at Carleton could completely change my future for me.
I think that’s what I’m looking forward to most about university… all the possibilities. My first year courses include history, English, classical music history, political science and of course, journalism, which means that I’m going to be learning about so many diverse subjects that could take me anywhere in my life. Who knows? I could turn my attention and my passion towards North American Politics, or classic literature. The future is wide open.
As to what I’m nervous about? The food, the “freshman fifteen,” a total stranger living with me, classes with 300 people, making friends among said 300 people… pretty much everything. I don’t know what I’m getting myself into, but I couldn’t be more stoked. One more month until the fun begins…
…oh, and the schoolwork, long lectures, essays and stress. But let’s not think about that just yet.
