Getting Used to Deadlines in Post-Secondary

Avoiding procrastination makes deadlines much easier to deal with.

Oh boy, WHAT a week! Since my last post, things have really gotten hectic and the last little while has been especially crazy! The reason: withdrawal deadlines fast approaching. The dates are different for each institution, and for MRU it was near the end of November. In plain English, it essentially means that it’s the last day one can withdraw from a class without penalty.

That sounds wonderful for students who haven’t shown up for class or really put in any effort, but for the students who are serious about seeing the semester through and getting a good grade, it's a brutal time. Three term papers, a group assignment worth 30 per cent of the final grade, an analysis and then a news story due ALL ON THE SAME DAY!

Not. Fun.

BUT don't be scared! I have the solution to beating this so kindly dubbed “week of the infinite succubus” by some of my fellow students: Do NOT procrastinate!

Most professors, like mine, gave us the due dates of all these assignments well in advance and, of course, I chose to leave ALL of them until the week before it was due. Writing a bunch of term papers where at least six sources are required, and the topics range from multiculturalism to an analysis of a communications theory, in one week is not an easy task. And trying to maintain somewhat of a normal lifestyle during this time is close to impossible.

So to sum it all up: do not procrastinate. It may be OK in high school or junior high every once in a while, but don’t let it become a habit. Because when mid- to end of November and other deadlines roll around, the experience can be less than pleasant.

And if you’re anything like me, the coffee business will certainly flourish off of your lack of sleep from multiple late-nighters. Hahahaha!

Until next time!
