Ten years ago, we were unpleasantly reminded that evil exists in our world. Thousands of lives were taken in an instant, and today we remember the horror of that September day: 9-11.
The ramifications of the terrorist attacks are ongoing. While 343 firefighters passed away at the World Trade Center for their courageous acts in 2001, many more heroes are still suffering. The fumes and toxins created from attacks 10 years ago are said to be the root cause of many firefighters' deaths even today. But the pain that lingers now is much more than just physical.
Communities gathered around Ground Zero today to pay respects to their loved ones. Children reminisced about the parents they would have – or rather, should have – known. Families congregated to gain closure from the day which turned neighbours' faces into mere memories.
Closer to home, Christy Clark, Premier of British Columbia, paid her condolences today. In a press release, she said: "We continue to mourn the loss of 24 Canadians among the thousands of citizens from many countries who were fatefully in and around the World Trade Centre plaza, the Pentagon and on hijacked planes when terrorists struck at the heart of America. On September 11, we will hold their families and friends in our hearts."
Indeed, the memories of that September day will stay in our hearts forever. Let this bitter anniversary remind us to cherish every moment and live each day as though it is our last. For thousands of undeserving victims, it was. Lest we forget.
9/11
9/11 is definitely something we should remember. although I was only 7 when that happened, I still remember my parents forbidding to watch TV on that morning. I guess America did learn to be more viligent after that.
