February 19th was the night of the Eco Fashion Forward Fundraising Night, at the Vancouver Public Library. It was filled with musicians live painting, and of course, fashion. Stepping inside was amazing, especially to find so many well dressed people. I caught up with singer Vince Vaccaro from Victoria, and he exclaimed, “Tonight’s cool. We’re all stunned. Every 30 seconds we’re looking around like “Oh my god, everyone is so beautiful!”
The doors opened at 8:00 pm, and the first musician was Adam Thomas. His mellow jazz suited the atmosphere perfectly, and as people came strolling in, I was found gushing at all the things people around me where wearing. I noticed floral patterns were quite in, along with high wasted skirts and ruffled tops.
As the opening speeches went along, Kim Cathers, of Our Social Fabric, explained the purpose of the night. “We’re trying to reduce the amount of textiles going into landfills.” The night was for raising money for Eco Fashion Week, and a chance for the designers to introduce themselves. She explained that the designers at the event were aiming to have the latest fashion trends include sustainable eco-friendly wears.
As the fashion show went underway, I was quite curious to find out what these designs would look like. I can happily say that I was pleasantly surprised by the results. The looks were all wearable, and the audience looked completely satisfied.
At the start of the show, neutral “earth” colours dominated, like green and tan, as to fit in with the “eco-friendly” spirit. Details like leather and cowboy fringes were going strong, and I remember those same details from a fashion show I reviewed a few months ago. Dresses with frills, and wrap dresses were everywhere, along with big flowery headpieces. The designers had an interesting combination of dresses with a certain dominating colours like black and white, and then added details in different colours such as green, blue, and hot pink. These details were the headpieces, belts, and bags.
The interesting thing about the show was that the models weren’t on a runway, but they were up on the second floor of the library’s balconies, with spotlights shining on them as they showcased the looks.
All in all, I have to say I loved all the designs. Everything was wearable, and leaves a person with no guilt that any of the clothes are harming mother nature. Everybody was also really friendly in the audience, and the music fit in perfectly. The night truly was a celebration of fashion, and I’m looking forward to seeing what Eco Fashion Week has in store.
