Fashion redefines "out of this world."
Forget Prada’s knee high boots, it’s time to take on a more literal definition of “high fashion,” folks! Japanese fashion designer Tae Ashida launched a designer space suit for astronaut Naoko Yamazaki and the outfit is, well, truly out of this world.
Yamazaki, a female Japanese astronaut who blasted off for a 13-day space mission to the International Space Station earlier this month, asked Tae to design a custom space suit outfit for the journey. Ashida decided on a light blue knit cardigan with navy blue shorts, and explained the outfit gives "a sense of grace… so that she can feel at ease as she carries out a tough mission in a male-dominated, bleak atmosphere." Yamazaki is one of three females aboard the space shuttle Discovery, helping to set a new record for the most women in space at the same time.
“I am looking forward to seeing Yamazaki in my design. It is like a dream come true to see my clothes worn in space,” said Tae.
Tae Ashida, who debuted as a designer in 1991 for the fashion line Miss Ashida, has been described as having an elegant modern style. Her father, Jun Ashida, is also a well-known fashion designer, who once worked as a dressmaker for Empress Michiko and he is currently grooming Tae to take over his fashion company one day when he retires.
Meanwhile, as the hunt for the perfect cardigan continues down on earth for us, it’s nice to see fashion entering a new realm high above us.
