Lady Gaga's Haute Couture Influences

Have you checked out Lady Gaga's new video, Alejandro?

Whether you love it or hate it, there's no denying it's running rampant with the fashion of the always eccentric Lady Gaga. After a first view, I had a she-did-not-just-do-that expression frozen on my face mixed in with a few milliseconds of confusion and shock, and then I attempted to dissect the video's interesting style and googled “fashion and Lady Gaga.” Needless to say, I got lots of hits and articles on the topic – all very interesting stuff.

It was no surprise though since all of her videos leave you with a “what the...” kind of feeling. However, one of the reasons I love watching Lady Gaga's videos is because of her Midas touch. But instead of turning everything into gold, her particular touch adds absurdity to everything – I haven't seen one thing she's worn that looked remotely normal.

One of the hits that came up on Google was the blog of Nicola Formichetti, the stylist for the Alejandro video, and she explains in an entry that there are actually many respected fashion influences in the music video. So disturbing parts aside (those haircuts sent chills up my spine), let’s just focus on the true fashion aspects of the video.

Did you know the male military outfits and studded glasses were custom-made by Emporio Armani? Meanwhile, the black Victorian-looking cape was made by the late designer Alexander McQueen, Gaga's old pal. She even wore an outfit that included a black vest by Dolce & Gabbana, and black heels by Christian Louboutin.

I can still watch the video over and over again and notice something new every time...and that's what I think is so enjoyable about the video for me.

Whether I'm horrified at her tights or captivated by her much talked about nun outfit, Lady Gaga offers something new every time, and that's something great about her particular brand of fashion.
