From Red Carpet to Grad Ceremonies: Oscar-Inspired Grad Styles

Which trends and colours won our hearts at this year’s Academy Awards? Envelope Please!

If you’re still looking for that perfect grad dress, the red carpet is the perfect place to start looking for the latest trends and colours in evening wear. This year, metallic or muted hues will get you noticed, and if you add in strategic sparkle and glimmer – even better. This year’s Oscars seemed to lean towards stiffer, architectural shapes that embodied glamour, and less drapery. Instead of the usual black, top actresses chose bold colours and bold styles, like the strapless futuristic-space-age-meets-cupcake-frosting gown seen on Jennifer Lopez or the timeless look channeled by Sandra Bullock.

GOING FOR GOLD

Sandra Bullock Maggie Gyllenhall

Metallics have been a dominant theme, worn by almost everyone from risk-taking trendsetter Sarah Jessica Parker, to Miley Cyrus’s strapless number, and even Oscar winning director Kathryn Bigelow. The shades ranged from pale golds to dark silvers. Sandra Bullock definitely dressed as a winner, with her gold, statuesque shaped dress and simple yet elegant hairstyle. The carpet was also awash with bold blues, and not just from Avatar! Blue hues also stole the spotlight, as seen on Maggie Gyllenhall’s watercolour print dress. Mo’Nique’s electric blue asymmetrical dress by Tadashi Shoji was also quite memorable.

LOVE THE CUFFS

Miley Cyrus Meryl Streep

Both Miley Cyrus’s golden cuff with a bow to match and Meryl Streep’s matching tiger pattern cuffs are proof that cuffs and chunky bracelets dazzled on this year’s red carpet. So if you’re looking to glam up your dress with accessories, keep in mind that the chunkiest accessories at this year’s Oscars were seen on the wrists.

FLOWER POWER

Sarah Jessica Parker Charlize Theron

As if Sandra Bullock’s flowery beaded-bodice gown was not enough, floral themes were spotted everywhere. Charlize Theron’s cringe-worthy rosettes made her dress stand out – but not in a good way. Meanwhile, Sarah Jessica Parker’s yellow Chanel dress was complemented with just the right amount of floral detail.

OTHER WAYS TO ROCK THE FROCK

Carey Mulligan Kristen Stewart

Carey Mulligan’s strapless, black-beaded gown with a longer train and box pleats accentuated her tiny waist while Kristen Stewart wore a midnight blue gown with a sculpted bodice that put her on the best dressed list. Whether you’re going for muted hues or bolder colors, slim-fitting and strapless styles were a major hit at this year’s Oscars.

Everyone gets inspired by the red carpet and it's great how every actress brings their own flair in the garments they choose to wear. This way, everyone else can use them as an inspiration and come up with something else that ends up being even more unique.
