Photo: Venus Williams in a revealing outfit at the 2010 French Open.
I've never been much of a tennis fan (a.k.a. being glued to the TV when the French Open rolls around this time of year), but this year is different. While the players might not all come home with a trophy, a certain few get a huge first place in the category of wacky outfits in my books.
First up, we have contestant Moulin Rouge, I mean, Venus Williams. "The outfit is about illusion, and that's been a lot of my motif this year, illusion," says Venus. Wearing a lacy red and black outfit and giving fans a glimpse of her nude underwear with every lunge and dive, it isn't a surprise that the photographers can’t bear to leave her court.
Tuesday's runway model – er, I mean, tennis star – Bethanie Mattek-Sands, played with a pink shirt, black skirt and knee-high socks to match. Apparently she will be sticking to the sock style but changing colours for different occasions (insert LOL here).
Meanwhile, Venus’ sister, Serena Williams, as well as Roger Federer are donning bright turquoise-toned outfits by Nike. Rafael Nadal? Same look, but props on the lime green and even brighter shade of blue.
Let's hope they play as good as they look! Could the French Open actually top the French couture runway shows? Unlikely. But could the French Open shine new light on the world of sports and fashion? Definitely.
