Adventures in Hostel Cooking

It helps to use some creativity when it comes to meals in foreign places.

Let me preface this blog by saying that I have never, ever been able to cook. Most of my attempts at conquering the kitchen end with severe carnage. There has been pasta boiled over, cookies burnt to a crisp, and of course, the odd oven mitt lit on fire.

So when my friend and I started to grow sick of pizza every night while travelling - I know, I didn't think it could happen either - we hesitantly started cooking for ourselves.

Most of the time, it's pasta in tomato or pesto sauce (always the cheapest option at the grocery store, no matter the country!), but we've also made chicken curry and jambalaya. Considering that I couldn't even stir-fry before this trip, I'm very proud of us!

Hostel kitchens aren't often stocked well, which calls for a bit of creativity. With one pot and a hot plate, you can easily make a great spaghetti dinner. (Hopefully the pot has handles. It does suck when there aren't handles.)

The image above is of our latest creation! Simple, but delicious. And yes, those are indeed veggies! The luxury!

For what it's worth, the signs posted in hostel kitchens also provide hours of entertainment. I spotted this one in Heidelberg, Germany.

Bon appetit!
