I met an English expat in Berlin who made this claim of his new home: visit the city for longer than two weeks and you're doomed to stay forever. We only spent four days in the German capital, but here's a rundown of the coolest sights.
Just a few yards from where Soviet troops constructed the Berlin Wall, the gate is also just a stone's throw from the hotel out of which Michael Jackson once famously dangled his baby over the balcony. (Yes, I did take pictures of the latter; please don't judge me!)
Officially known as the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, this tribute covers an entire city block of Berlin. Our guide told us there was no correct interpretation to the design, thousands of square metres taken up by tall cement blocks. They grow taller as you walk along the rows.
Once the headquarters of Hitler's air force, this building later became an East Berlin government office. (Thus, the massive communist mural of happy, dancing comrades painted on its facade.) It continues to serve an eerie purpose: as the city tax office.
This is the longest existing stretch of the Berlin Wall, painted over by artists from around the world. Where else are you going to find a mural of Leonid Brezhnev and Erich Honecker - respective then-leaders of the USSR and East Berlin - making out?
Just a taste...
Sounds like you had a great time, and had some good laughs along the way. This is just a taste of all the great tings Germany has to offer, I would recommend going to anyone
Would love to go there!
Berlin sounds like a really interesting place - I would love to be able to go there and especially see and learn more about the Holocaust Memorial - there's such a sad history there.
A funny read, sounds to me
A funny read, sounds to me like Berlin has lots to offer! I was wondering what the picture was but I finally figured it out on the last line!
