It’s not hard to believe that music can change lives – and you only have to go as far as Vancouver roots-rock duo Redgy Blackout to find solid proof.
Redgy Blackout was formed in 2006 by Jeremy Breaks and Scott Perrie. The duo has released three albums and are currently one of the Top 20 contestants in the 2011 Peak Performance Project.
Each year, the Peak Performance Project (PPP) offers local artists a chance to battle it out in hopes of winning the $100,500 grand prize. Redgy Blackout has been competing against some of Vancouver’s finest in an effort to win a spot in the Top 3 showcase at the Commodore Ballroom on November 17th.
A big part of the PPP is the various challenges set out for the bands, one of which is to give back. In order to complete this task, Redgy Blackout has been fundraising for BC’s Children Hospital with a lofty goal of $5000 by November 17th, the day of the Top 3 showcase.
The band offered signed EPs to the first 12 people to donate more than $25 and is donating all the funds raised from their song, When You Were A Kid, to the hospital.
It may have been a task required by the PPP, but having a social conscience is nothing new for the band whose bio reads: “Through our music and community action we celebrate diversity, equality and promote social and environmental justice to move toward a brighter future for everyone.”
For a band whose commitment to social action is so profound, it was a job they were ready and willing to accept – and BC Children’s Hospital is a foundation close to their hearts. Their song, When You Were A Kid, is a song about how, “we should remember the joys of being a kid every day, and live with an open heart.” And it’s a cause that hits close to home for Perrie, who recently became an uncle.
While they’re making progress towards their $5000 goal, Redgy Blackout is still looking for donations.
“We’re almost halfway there, but not quite,” says Breaks. “We’ve still got a ways to go.”
To donate to the cause, visit Redgy Blackout’s Bandcamp page and buy When You Were A Kid on a pay-what-you-want basis. You have until November 17th to purchase the song and help Redgy Blackout change lives.
