It’s Friday, Friday, Gotta Listen to Rebecca Black on Friday

Rebecca Black may have changed a certain day of the week forever… I’m only exaggerating a little bit.

I really doubt you haven’t heard the song I’m talking about by now. When I Google the word “Friday,” the search generator automatically suggests “Friday Rebecca Black.” When I mention the day in any given circumstance, people around me automatically burst into song about how they “gotta get down on Friday.” When Friday does actually roll around, my friends are no longer excited for it because it’s the day before the weekend but rather because it gives them an excuse to post super clever statuses about Rebecca Black.

Since Black’s debut single Friday hit the Youtube circuit on March 14th (coincidentally a Friday), the relentlessly catchy tune seemed to have infested social networks around the globe overnight. And definitely not in a good way.

The 13-year-old singer has officially become the person everybody loves to hate. Many industry critics, celebrities and angsty teenagers alike have deemed the strongly auto-tuned song “The Worst Song Ever.” In addition, countless parodies and rants about the song have been posted on Youtube.

OK, so Black’s lyrics are not exactly mind blowing. I’ve known for some time that Thursday comes before Friday, Saturday after Friday…and Sunday afterwards. A little poking fun of is fine (refer to Joe Jonas’ recent tweets), but the people who have begun to actively humiliate and threaten the singer need to know that what they’re doing is hurtful.

During a recent interview with Good Morning America (see video below), Black was near tears as she talked about the nasty responses she has received.
Doesn’t this sound like Justin Bieber hate all over again? We need to realize that cyber-bullying celebrities is cyber-bullying nonetheless. Saying things like “I hope you cut yourself” and “I hope you get an eating disorder so you’ll look pretty” to anyone, under any circumstances, is simply not acceptable.

On a more positive note, “we so excited” for Black’s debut record. She has confirmed that the record would contain themes similar to that of Friday. Songs about other days of the week? Odes to cereal? Who knows. One thing is for sure though – it’s going to be “fun fun fun fun.” Don’t pretend like you didn’t see that coming.

I really do hate this song

I really do hate this song and it does not deserve to be as popular as it is but it doesn't give anyone the excuse to tell this girl to "cut herself" or anything like that. When she puts her album out it's just going to give the public more of an excuse to put her down. Props to her for not listening to haters but she really needs to look for a new career path.

Famous for the wrong reasons.

Famous for the wrong reasons. It's great to hear the joke the first time, but not every single Friday.

sumaiya

"Friday" just wasn't Rebecca's kind of song. She can actually sing but chose to try to pull off a Ke$ha. To get a better reputation she needs to actually sing a song with no auto-tune, hit the right notes with some coaching and prove people wrong!

I know she was only offered a

I know she was only offered a few songs. I know she paid a lot of money that wasn't refundable. I know she just wanted to make a dream come true - and so I don't blame her. I blame the songwriter, and I blame Becca for letting them autotune her voice so much. Even at 13, she should know what sounds good and what doesn't. But for the haters, enough is enough. There are limits, and you're the reason she's so famous now in the first place. The people to blame are the ones who spread this video. Otherwise, everyone would have been happy and there wouldn't have been another 13 year old in tears.

Re: Friday

I agree with you completely. People should stop making fun of her. She hasn't done anything to deserve it. Besides, its hurtful and it could happen to anyone.

Not fun, fun, fun.

Rebecca's "Friday" video definitely got some good laughs out of me. You know, the fact that some 13 year olds are driving to school, the awkward stand-up dancing in the back seat in front of a green screen, and the kinda creepy rapper guy that was just thrown into the middle of this ridiculous... thing that some would call a song. However, I'm going to be fair, because I HAD to know exactly how Rebecca got herself into that mess. She went through some record company which offers limited stardom for a price - I think the article I read quoted $2000 for the music video and recording studio time. Anyone can do it, pretty much, and you get to select from a number of pre-written songs. And Rebecca admitted that the lyrics to "Friday" were abysmal, but all the other songs were about love, and she didn't want to sing about something she's never experienced. Okay Rebecca, was it really worth all this heckling?
I also wanted to check to see if other songs this company had written were as simple as "Friday". I watched one other video by this recording company called "Butterflies" and it was actually pretty good, and it was a really cute video. Not my type of music, but refreshingly different from Rebecca Black.

At least she can laugh at herself

Check out Rebecca Black making fun of the lyrics in Friday - SO worth watching. She may not be a great singer, but perhaps comedy is in her future? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQkqo9P2Sqc&feature=player_embedded

LOL this makes me laugh every

LOL this makes me laugh every time I watch it! The part about consumerism is my absolute favourite.

I love her face when she says: "For some people, it's a mortgage; for others...it's a bowl of cereal."

It's great to see that she's able to make fun of herself. She needs to host SNL asap.

Ha!

I love the "quotes" bit... funny!
