Lady Gaga takes action against bullying.
“We lost a Little Monster this week,” Lady Gaga said of 14-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer at the iHeartRadio music festival on September 24, 2011.
For years, Rodemeyer’s classmates bullied him, largely for being gay. Unfortunately, committing suicide was a path that would end the bullying, and Rodemeyer took it.
Rodemeyer’s story reached Gaga, who then had this to say on Twitter:
"I am meeting with our President. I will not stop fighting. This must end. Our generation has the power to end it. Trend it #MakeALawForJamey"
Lady Gaga dedicated a performance of Hair to the late Rodemeyer at the festival and had this to say:
"I wrote this record [Hair] about how your identity is really all you've got when you're in school ... so tonight, Jamey, I know you're up there looking at us, and you're not a victim... you're a lesson to all of us. I know it's a bit of a downer, but sometimes the right thing is more important than the music.
What matters now is that we all recognize that bullying is a problem. Don’t join in it, but don’t just watch or ignore it (NIMBY). Make a stand. Tell an adult.
Most (if not all) victims of bullying share one desire: for the bullying to stop. If we don’t help them, then they might just end the bullying themselves.
