Twitter’s most followed celebrity and human being (celebrities are human) now has a follower base that is nearly half of Canada’s population: 15 million people.
In the past few months, Lady Gaga’s broken Twitter records again and again. She hit nine million followers in March, 10 million in May and 11 million in June. And in the same way that planet Earth’s soon-to-be population of seven billion will be growing exponentially for the next few years, the number of Gaga’s followers on Twitter will be growing too.
According to Mediabistro’s All Twitter, Gaga gained her most recent million followers in only 28 days. If Gaga’s good fortune on Twitter continues, she’ll have reached 16 million followers by the end of November and 20 million followers by mid-2012.
I can say without a doubt that Gaga’s been one of the most influential celebrities of our generation. Her outrageous outfits always draw us in, and her songs almost become national anthems. She is groundbreaking, and she always leaves her fans wanting more.
What I admire about Lady Gaga, however, is that she’s got the guts to be different. Instead of embracing convention, Gaga defies it. She sets her own rules and blazes her own trail. But it’s not just her music (and her outfits) that draw her many followers, it's her leadership. Gaga is known to voice her opinion against bullying and homophobia, making her an admirable role-model. From the work that she’s done and the work that she continues to do, we can all learn a lesson: be who you want to be,
Barbie Girls little monsters.
