Starting Early: What You Need to Know About Applying to University

School has gotten under way, and autumn lingers, shooing away summer memories with every falling leaf. Just when we seniors have finally gotten used to waking up early, a great task has been added on to our hefty grade 12 to-do lists – post-secondary applications.
Did you know that for many institutions, applications are already available? If you’re already freaking out, check out the following tips to get a few tid-bits on the application process.

Where should I apply?
Find programs you’re interested in. Then, check out universities and other post-secondary institutions to see whether they offer what you’d like to study. Find out about student life, residence and tuition costs.

How do I apply?
Most universities and colleges will have information on the application procedures on their websites. If you’re planning on applying to schools in Ontario, visit the Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC) website.

What if I can’t afford to go where I want to go?
Many places offer scholarships based on grades, and some offer even bigger awards based on merit. Most provinces offer provincial loan programs, and most universities also offer bursaries for those in financial need.

What if my grades aren’t good enough?
Your grade 12 marks are what make or break your acceptance. The year has only just begun, work hard and your post-secondary aspirations are definitely within reach. Grade 11 marks are only taken into account for early acceptance and some scholarships.

Apply to lots of schools!
Although application fees can add up, do not just apply for one school. At the very least, apply for your top three choices. You’ll be sitting pretty if they all accept you and you get to make the final decision.
