The Young Worker’s Challenge

Need a job this summer? You’re not alone! With the recession in place and our economy in a slump, many companies are now hiring fewer teen employees. So what can you do?

If you cannot find a job, you might consider the Service Canada Centre for Youth. And if an odd job is all you need then the Service Canada Centre for Youth is definitely where you should go. A program for youth ages 15-30, the Service Canada Centre for Youth is ideal for those who are not looking for a permanent job and do not mind flexibility in their hours of work. The types of jobs that may be available include yard work for homeowners, house cleaning, painting and more. Certain jobs may last from two hours all the way to five days. As the Service Canada Centre for Youth is dedicated to helping youth and students find summer employment, services such as resumé and cover letter writing help, mock interviews, computer access and an online job bank are all provided free of charge to those looking for casual work in the summer. Although they do not match teens with jobs, going to one of the centres to improve your resumé might be worth the trip, and greatly increase your chances of getting hired.

If you would like to contact them and find a centre near you, visit their website at www.servicecanada.gc.ca and go to the heading “Students and Youth,” from there, look under “For Youth,” where you’ll find a link to the directory.
