Looking for the perfect way to spend your summer? Spending your summer working doesn’t necessarily mean tiresome labour or boring tasks. There are plenty of jobs out there that will not only keep you busy, but that are enjoyable too!

1. Camp Counsellor

Sports camps, science camps, day camps... local community camps are always looking for counsellors to help supervise activities for younger children. Check for local camps you can assist at. Your local YMCA/YWCA is a great place to start, as they host a variety of day camps for young children!

2. Farmers’ Market

Are you a crafty person? If you enjoy creating crafts of various sorts (jewelry, woodwork, paintings, etc.), then perhaps you should check out nearby farmers’ markets. Farmers’ markets can be a great place to sell your handiwork or even your baking!

3. Reception

If you’re looking for a job that may be more applicable to future employment, reception is where you should start. Dental offices, car dealerships and small businesses are often on the lookout for responsible, friendly and mature students willing to work the front desk. Although indoors, jobs like these can help to develop foundational skills useful in future office settings!

4. Heritage Youth Researcher Summer Program

If you are an Alberta student located in or around Calgary, Edmonton or Lethbridge, you can spend your summer doing research at a local university laboratory. Funded by the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research, this opportunity is open only to students in the summer following grade 11.

5. Amusement Park

Whether it’s Calaway Park or Wonderful Waterworld, working at an amusement park can be an exciting time. Not only do you get to interact with a variety of people every day, but you can spend your time outside. If you are looking for a fun upbeat environment, then a job at an amusement park is a great job for you this summer!

There are a variety of job opportunities out there, so keep your eyes open to find the job that is perfect for you. Remember to check your local papers and watch for advertisements for available jobs this upcoming summer. Don’t forgo an opportunity even if you have some reservations about it at first; take a chance and apply for jobs that look interesting – you might be surprised!
