It feels as if school has just started, and here you are, deciding your future already. Take a deep breath, for it will all come together. One thing is for sure, you need to do some research, (I know, more work) and there are deadlines that must be met. Follow some simple guidelines to make your post-secondary transition a smooth one.
Figure Out Application Deadlines
When applying for post-secondary schools, research when applications are due for early admission and regular admission. Something that not all students know is classes with smaller sizes are categorized by a first come, first serve basis. This means you want to apply as early as possible. So if you receive early admission to a university, usually it means you also get first crack at registering for courses, which is a good thing.
Beware of Application Fees
For most post-secondary schools there are application fees: one for your application, and another if you wish to apply for residency. Be prepared to have to pay when applying, so have a credit card handy. Be picky when deciding on what schools to apply for, or you may end up spending hundreds of dollars before you are even accepted into a school!
Do Your Research on Schools
Take time to decide what school is best for you. Look at the programs they offer and see which one gives you the most options. Look into smaller schools as well, for just because they are tiny doesn’t mean they won’t offer a great education.
Do Your Research on Courses
Find out more information about the courses you are interested in. Make sure the credits are transferable, not only between courses at that specific school, but credits that can flow to another school if you happen to change your mind.
All it takes to apply is a little research and a few minutes. But don’t think it’s all over after you submitted the application fee. Check your e-mail or mailbox often, for a letter stating what documents you must send to go along with your initial application should arrive soon.
Good luck!
I've just recently been
I've just recently been going through the burden of applying for post-secondary school. I think it's ridiculous how they expect us to know everything we're supposed to know. The sites are so difficult to look through, and the information is hidden- it's like an online scavenger hunt. If it wasn't for my college advisor, i think i'd be completely lost!
