Summer is just around the corner so it’s time to look for summer employment. Getting a summer job does not have to be boring or stressful. The following tips will help you find and obtain the summer job you want.
Start volunteering now!
Volunteering is a must-have on any resumé. Even if it is only for a few hours a week, every little bit counts. Employers know volunteers are committed, dedicated people and it will give you a step up above everybody else.
Create a proper resumé.
Almost every company will ask for a resumé when hiring so have yours ready! Google a resumé-making site that will give you suggestions and examples of a professional design for your resumé. Volunteering, school sports, school clubs, extracurricular and previous jobs should be included. If it looks good at first glance, it will be more likely to grab your future employer’s interest.
What are you good at?
No one wants to end up with a job they hate. Make a list of things you like to do, things you are good at and things you look forward to in a job. This will help you find a job that is at least somewhat related to your skills and interests and is more likely to be fun and enjoyable. However, keep in mind that everyone needs to start somewhere with a job. In other words, try to enjoy what you do, even if you don’t feel like it’s your dream summer job!
Do your research.
Go on the Internet, find brochures and talk to a wide variety of people who have worked at different summer jobs and ask them questions about what they were required to do. No one wants to make a bad first impression or figure out too late that the job is not what they thought it would be. Knowing what to expect will help you come prepared and ready to do your job the right way.
Be persistent.
After applying for a job, you will most likely not hear back for at least a couple days and quite possibly longer in this economy, so don’t fret! When you apply for the job, make sure to ask the employer how long it might take to receive a call back. If you do not hear back in the allotted time, take the initiative to call them! It shows you are keen, interested and dedicated.
