Tips to Stay Motivated in Summer School

Some helpful advice on how to stay focused in summer school.

Outside, the sun is shining outside, the sky is blue and just yesterday your friends called you up to go hang out at the pool – an offer that you had to decline because sadly, you’re stuck… in summer school.

Let’s face it, being cooped up inside a classroom for four hours everyday (especially during the summer) can be difficult, but here are some tips that will hopefully keep you motivated to get through it successfully.

Set a goal for the grade you want to achieve.

Then, tell everyone you know about it. The more people that know about it, the better. This way, you will be held responsible for what you said you were going to accomplish as well as feel a bit of healthy pressure to push you towards your goal.

Write your reason for being in summer school in a place where you can see it every day.

This can be your mirror, your bulletin board, your iPod home screen – anywhere provided you can give yourself a daily refresher of why it is exactly that you’re putting yourself through summer school.

Designate certain times of the day to hanging out with friends and certain times to doing homework.

Knowing that you’re going to be going out soon can often serve as a good motivator to get your homework done for the next day. Work hard, play harder.

Stay focused during class.

Find a strategy that works for you – whether this is chewing gum, munching on a snack or taking the occasional bathroom break when your brain starts to wander, be sure to pay attention so that you won’t have to go home and relearn the material.

Get a tutor, friend or parent who will help you with the material you don’t understand when you’re not in class.

No one wants to struggle alone with hard course work; therefore, get someone to help! Knowing and understanding the material will not only make going to class less daunting, but will also motivate you to succeed.
