Remember the Pain

Do you want to remember?
Do you want to see
what they saw,
hear what they heard,
feel what they felt?

Do you want to see your brother
lying in a pool of his own blood,
a white marker
the only reminder
of his suffering, years later.

Do you want to hear
the roar of the guns,
the drone of the planes,
the screams of men pushed
far beyond their limits.
Do you want to feel the grief, the pain,
the agony of having lived
when so many died.

Of course you don’t.
And because of them,
you won’t have to
for yourself.

So stand silent
through the long moments
as they remember,
and try to imagine
what it would have been like
if they hadn’t felt it, so you wouldn’t have to.
