Sidewalk

Like an army the tree trunks stood
Gazing at their battlefield
Mourning over the forest that was once theirs
The contours of their dominance shrinking and shrinking
And adjacent to them their opponent lay
Like a villain it smiled a crack
And despite anything Mother Nature could do
The sidewalk would be there forever.
