Spring Trend Report 2011

Spring 2011 is all about being bold. Whether you rock a retro ‘70s look, or dare to wear something sheer, this is not the season to be shy with style. Here are five of our favourite trends from the spring 2011 runways.


Between the Lines
Stripes are always a key trend for spring, as they capture the breeziness of nautical life. Jil Sander showed bold, thick stripes, while Marc Jacobs brought out thin, colourful horizontals. Stripes this season are meant to be noticed, so don’t be afraid to let them dominate an outfit.

Going Bananas
It was prints galore this season, with patterns ranging from the oriental florals at Dries Van Noten to the tropical bananas at Prada. If you’re feeling confident, take on one of this season’s boldest trends and try mixing various prints in one outfit.

Flared Out
Looking for a stylish alternative to skinny jeans? Look no further than the flared denim pants at Derek Lam or the futuristic print bell-bottoms at Topshop Unique. Guys can also jump onboard and take a daring stab at the ’70s look by sporting slim-fitted flared trousers.

The Gap
Sheer Brilliance
Light and wispy sheer fabric played peekaboo at Givenchy and Alberta Ferretti. Street-style setters and off-duty models chose the sheer maxi skirt as the next big thing, but seeing as it is a difficult piece to pull off, sheer romantic blouses or semi-transparent dresses and skirts work equally well (just don’t forget your cami or slip).

How Strapping
With the arrival of warm weather, it comes as no surprise that strappy shoes dominated the runways. At Christian Dior, traditional straps were replaced with ribbon and rope counterparts. Ribbon laces that tie delicately up the leg reflected a minor trend of the season: the ballerina look.

I love everything here, but be forewarned! Stripes are a dying fad for shirts like that, although they are starting to appear more on dresses. try vertical striped shorts for summer! But shirts like above have numbered seasons. Im surprized cute day dresses arent here because they are definitely in. I love the sandals, but spring in calgary only means slush and mud, so I'll have to keep those for summer. The flare pants are awesome cuz if you're too skinny or wider than you wished, these shape your legs perfectly! They are a great way of being pretty without showing so much.

Is anyone else dying to go shopping? The strappy sandals, the breezy tops, and all the bold prints are driving me crazy. I can't seem to walk into a store without walking out with something new. This spring, what I will need to focus on, is NOT spending all my money. But I won't be disappointed if I do!

I'm glad stripes are big again for spring! I love pairing striped tops with floral skirts.

I've always been a big fan of sheer/chiffon blouses, but I'll skip the flared jeans, seeing as how I'll probably drown in all the denim given my height.

I am always so attracted to stripes but I wish I knew a better way to wear them! They aren't the most flattering pattern girls when we would like to look smaller and not wider.

Bright patterns on the other hand I think are awesome. They add some happiness to a boring outfit and are great to add some sunshine on those rainy spring days.

Fashion is like the circle of life. What was once "groovy" is now vintage chic. I would definitely wear some of these outfits/accessories. They are easy to match up with most of my less interesting clothing.

Some of these styles are a little out there for me, but that's what gets the eye. Being plain is fine if you want to be left in the background. It's being bold that is going to get you noticed.
