BC Youth Week 2010 Kicks Off!

BC Youth Week is the annual celebration of youth and the positive contributions they bring to their communities. In 1995, a group of youth recreation leaders in the Lower Mainland decided that this idea would be an “interesting little project.”

Initially they thought it would be a Youth Day, but eventually decided on the idea of a week-long celebration.

There are many interesting events that happen during Youth Week; from dances to poetry slams to sporting events to BBQ's to concerts. All these great events offer plenty of variety for all ages. Here are some events that I would suggest checking out.

Amazing 2010 Youth Race:
Kick off Youth Week by solving clues, competing in games, and winning prizes in an Amazing Race-esque event. Enter your team and compete with others, meet new people, and have an afternoon of speed, skill, wits and teamwork. This event happens at Town Center Stadium in Coquitlam on April 30th, 3:30-5:45 pm. $4 per 4 person teams includes prizes a BBQ afterwards.

Eastburn Youth Week Hockey Tournament:
Go down to Eastburn Community Centre in Burnaby for their first annual Youth Week Hockey tournament. Youth ages 12-16 battle it out playing in an elimination format, to get their team name on the trophy. This is happening on May 6th, 5-6:30 pm, free of charge.

Spring Blast Beach Party:
Welcome in the warm weather by heading to the Mission Leisure Center to celebrate youth with other teens. Activities include: limbo, underwater scavenger hunt, a belly flop contest and much more. Win prizes and have fun on May 7th... goodbye raincoat, hello swim suits!

These are only a few events that you can check out. There are tons of other great events will be available all week long. A week of splendour awaits those that want to celebrate youth in BC. Another great thing about the week is that it highlights the programs and services available in our communities. So get out to youth centre, community centres and any other place that is hosting an event; and while you're there, make note of the great services and programs they have so that you can go back sometime with friends and take advantage of all these local facilities have to offer.

Have a great week celebrating youth, have some fun and think about how you can give back to your community (even more)! For more information visit www.bcyouthweek.com.
