Cheap Fashion Finds During a Recession

In the midst of an economic crisis, many of us may be finding ourselves pinching pennies, although it isn’t doing much in suppressing our passion and obsession for fashion. Assuming that none of us could completely relinquish our flagrant shopping habits, now would be the time to focus on affordability, rather than luxury. So I say, embrace low fashion because it’s here to stay – at least for now! Here are some cheap and chic alternatives to high-end fashion merchandise.

For the Ladies:

The Top
Ethereal fabrics are the latest trend, dominating many spring and summer runway shows, but you don’t have to pay the hefty price tag for the airy look. A ruffled Jabot halter top from Bebe costs $79; Superstore’s Joe Fresh flutter blouse on the other hand, is only $29, and it is as equally feminine and flirty – and not to mention affordable!

The Shoes
The Floret shoes from Guess by Marciano retail at a whopping price tag of $130, while Old Navy’s women’s peep-toe kitten-heel shoe costs only $6.99. The shoes from Old Navy are not only a steal, but the heel is much more practical, than the Floret shoes. How often are you going to wear four-inch heels anyway?

The Dress
Ah, the little black dress – the staple in every woman’s wardrobe. Just because we’re in a recession, it doesn’t mean you have to look frumpy when you go out. This strapless bubble dress from BCBG Max Azaria comes in at the stupendous price of $260; Gap’s strapless knit dress costs only $48.99 – looking en vogue has never been this thrifty.

For the Gentlemen:

The Shirt
The ever-dependable dress shirt is a fundamental piece for every man’s wardrobe; it can be worn casually with a blazer or dressed up with a tie and suit jacket. The Banana Republic classic-fit, non-iron, mini-plaid shirt costs $79, while the Hawkings McGill dress shirt from Urban Outfitters is sensibly priced at $29.99.

The Jeans
Jeans are coveted for their fit, versatility and aesthetic. Lucky Brand’s Lucky Legend slim-fit jeans sure look fashionable, but cost an arm and a leg at $150. Old Navy’s men’s skinny jeans are only $14.75 – a price tag that will give you the look, without paying the price.

The Shoes
For the casual retro look, black high-tops are a classic must-have piece for any man’s wardrobe. Champs retail men’s Converse All-Star hi-tops are $44.99, while Payless’ Airwalk canvas high-tops are sold at a more reasonable $25.99. The similarities are uncanny.
