With 2009 officially here, graduation is quickly approaching. Bridal and formal wear shops are in full swing for the imminent event, packed with racks full of shimmery, elegant and unique gowns in a rainbow of colours. Celia Knol, the store manager for Lisa's Bridal in New Westminster, BC says, “I find the trends for grad change so frequently that we really have to stay on top of styling. A grad girl wants to look red-carpet ready with a bit of glam in her accessories. They want new, unique and edgy."
So what's unique and edgy for 2009? Sorting through dress after dress, looking for that perfect one can be draining, so here are a few tips that'll help you remain energized while looking fabulously in style for the big night.
In general, the time for bubble gum pink and orange sherbet is long gone. Embrace your entrance into adulthood by picking gowns in mature but bold colours that make a statement. Knol suggests, “Stronger colours, particularly jewel tones are hot!"
About the only place you'll see volume this year at grad is in the hair. Long, slender dresses in silky fabrics are the style for 2009. “This year the style is more slinky and sexy, but not revealing," confirms Knol. Simple embellishments are also very popular. If you still want that princess feel and are not sure sleek is for you, look for pick-up skirts, tiered ruffles or a few layers of crinoline.
And Knol reminds you to be aware of one very important factor when you're shopping: "You DON'T want to show up at grad and be wearing the same dress as someone else. Ask before you shop if the store does not track styles. [If it doesn't], move on." If the store tracks its styles, you'll be able to find out if anyone else from your grad class has chosen the gowns you're considering, thereby preventing the embarrassment of an unwanted twin come grad night.
So how do you beat out your classmates to get the dress you want? Shop early if you want first pick," advises Knol. "The later in the season you shop, the less the options available to you. For example, ordering versus purchasing off the rack. "In the end, when you hit the stores, try on what you are drawn to immediately and don't be afraid of showing your personality with a funky style. "Look for style in the form of a silhouette that complements your body shape most and an eye-catching colour,"advises Knol. "Be open-minded and try on a little bit of everything."
Lastly, don't forget to shop smart by asking the right questions and by shopping early.
