Nicole Bridger's Fall/Winter 2011 Collection

When I think of “sustainable fashion,” words such as brown, shapeless and plain come to mind, but this is certainly not the case with many of today’s great eco-fashion designers, including Vancouver’s top sustainable designer Nicole Bridger.

On Thursday, February 24th I had the pleasure of attending Bridger's Fall/Winter 2011 show, which took place at the SALT building in Vancouver’s own Olympic Village. The exposed wooden planks in the ceiling and the adorable "grass carpet" created the perfect setting and made it obvious that this event was all eco, all the time! Not to mention, I knew I was in the right place when eveywhere I looked I saw extremely well-dressed people! After some very organic refreshments and snacks, the billowing white curtains closed and it was showtime... and what a show it was!

With every outfit that gracefully floated along the runway, I became more and more surprised by how wrong I was about environmentally-friendly couture. Beautiful coral coloured cardigans paired with dusty pinks and earth-tone oranges were bestowed upon my eyes, while still highlighting the natural, wispy shapes of each piece. Soft gem tones were a huge theme, which brought out the gorgeous and naturally made-up faces of the models.

With such simple but elegant eco-friendly pieces it is no wonder why Bridger is as successful as she is today. In addition to her eye for fashion, what sets Bridger apart from many other designers is her wonderfully uplifting values that are woven into the very fabric of who she is as a person. “The company has a three fold philosophy… 'Do what is right for the earth, it's people and spirit,'” Bridger explains. “So for the earth, it's sustainable fabric; people, it's ethical production, fair trade factories, and [the label with “I Am Love” stitched on the sleeve of each piece] is part of spirit. It's about doing things and making things better.” To further support the company philosophy, Bridger has product names like "Healing Cardigan” and “Integrity Top.”

Speaking to Bridger about her line and company philosophy after the show was truly an uplifting experience that I will never forget. I hope that one day, all fashion will follow in the footsteps of such inspiration by serving up environmentally-friendly garments with some pretty on the side!
