Stay cool during this sizzling season by flaunting the latest summer fashion trends.

Lingerie-inspired
Girls, clothing that was previously hiding underneath layers of clothing is in the spotlight. Lingerie-inspired pieces featuring silk and lace trim, have made an appearance on spring and summer 2010 runways like at Dolce & Gabbana and are spotted even at more budget-friendly places, like Forever XX1.

Sheer fabrics and draping
For another look, fashion looks back to ancient civilizations for inspiration. Models flaunt the Greek look with knotting and soft draping in dresses and blouses. Sheer fabrics creep onto the scene from Vera Wang, Versace and Oscar de la Renta, adding an elegant touch. The trend is meant to be feminine, but like the lingerie trend, never vulgar. Layering a shirt or shorts under a translucent top or skirt keeps the look less revealing.

Blazers
For fresher days or chillier nights, slip on a classic or a boyfriend blazer in a solid neutral color, a trend that carries on from spring. Keep your boyfriend blazer slightly oversized with rolled up sleeves for a relaxed cool look. Good examples of the trend can be seen on the Calvin Klein runway.

Shorts
Whether you’re male or female, shorts are hot this summer! Guys, please do spare the jean shorts or cutoffs. Although there will be plenty of plaid or surfer shorts in stores, why not try a khaki short or shorts in fabrics such as relaxed cotton or linen, which are classy and suited to the light, carefree feeling of the season. Aim for shorts that come right above the knee. For girls, shorts are becoming even shorter. On summer runways of top designers like Gucci and Marc Jacobs, boy, are hot shorts this season showing more leg than ever.

Patterns
Prints are in. Wear graphic prints, abstract shapes, floral patterns or stripes, especially in bottoms, as have been spotted DKNY and Balenciaga’s runways to keep it chic. One print, in particular, that has become popular is the tribal print. Gucci and Diane Von Furstenberg have featured earthy designs and geometric shapes in handbags, shoes and jewelry, as well as dresses and tops.

>Fashion and sports collide
This season, fashion draws inspiration from surf and sport. Be on the look out for summer collections featuring sporty basics, functional outerwear, rompers, and skintight pieces in a high-energy colour palette from designers like Alexander Wang. As well, the tousled, unkempt side-braid is the “it” style for sporty, yet fashionable hair this season, so keep that in mind when you’re dressing to this trend!
