While originally just a value of a select few environmentally conscious individuals, the go-green craze has spread like wildfire in recent years.
Environmental awareness is being raised on a global scale, impacting pop bottles, politics and everything in between. While we all want to do our part to help keep the planet healthy, it can be difficult for those of us who don't have the resources to buy hybrid cars or offset our carbon emissions.
It may seem like an impossible task, but fear not - there are ways to go green and make a difference without compromising cool or breaking the bank.
Refillable Travel Mugs
Recently, Starbucks has released a line of travel mugs made completely from recycled and remoulded plastic products. The green casing helps spread the "environmentally friendly" message without overdoing it, and every time you stop for a latte, you save the use of a disposable cup and receive a drink discount (bonus: some locations offer a free drink with the initial purchase!).
Shopping Bags
One of the most popular green items available at all price points, reusable shopping bags are affordable and can be used for much more than just groceries. Superstore offers several sizes of basic bags made from recycled post-consumer materials, while higher-end satchels and totes made from sustainable fabrics can be used for textbooks or trips to the gym or mall. If a longer-lasting investment piece seems more practical, vegan designers Matt & Nat offer several durable bag designs made from recycled plastic beverage bottles.
Vintage Clothing
We've all packed old clothes in boxes and sent them to charities after they've gotten too small, but what we don't often consider is where they end up. Thrift, consignment and vintage stores all carry fantastic selections of "clothing with experience" for a fraction of their original prices, some of which are in nearly new condition. Sometimes the gems are hidden amongst piles of oversized pajama bottoms and one-hit wonder band tees, but the thrill of the hunt can make shopping much more interesting. Not only will you save energy by reusing raw materials and prevent the pollution caused by the production and transportation of new garments, but your wardrobe will gain dimension and your bank statements will never be in the red.
