Many ambled through the halls of J. Percy Page with a feeling of nostalgia, tinged with reminiscences and memories that had been buried for so long finally resurfacing. Over the course of three days, from September 10th to 12th, all those affiliated to J Percy Page were invited to celebrate this fine school’s 25th Anniversary.
On Thursday night, a formal evening event took place with special guests such as Edmonton MLA Nareesh Badwaj, City of Edmonton Councillor Amarjeet Sohi and Bruce Coggles, the Edmonton Public School Board’s Superintendent. Guest speakers included past principals, such as John Pankhurst, the first principal of Page. Friday was the Alumni Basketball game and pub night – this indulgence came at no cost and was hosted from the comfort of Pages Gym. Saturday marked the school’s open house and tour, a chance for former and current students to stroll through the hallways and marvel at the Page memorabilia displays upstairs and downstairs. After many enjoyable hours of meandering through memory lane, many then moved on to the dinner social event at Players Sports Bar - where guests were able to share their recollections with each other.
J. Percy Page was a teacher who later became active in Alberta provincial politics, serving as the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta in the 1960’s. J Percy Page High School was named in honour of this great man who played such a vital role within the province.
The past plays a vital role within shaping our futures, and over the course of 25 years, J. Percy Page High School has helped shape many futures, and open numerous doors for both past and current students. It is moments like these that further instill that sense of school pride, and ultimately, belonging. It is events such as these that make us students beam with pride. It is events such as these, which make me realize how fortuitous I am to go such a excellent school, and how in the future I too shall look back at my time at Page and realize quite how much it helped to shape me.
