The crowd of eager teens gather with mouths agape and eyes drinking in the scene before them. Edmonton Youth Week – sounds innocuous doesn’t it? But it only just barely hints at all that occurs within this week packed full of intensified fun.
Occurring annually in Edmonton in the month of May, internationally speaking Youth Week serves as an event that gives credit to and empowers youth, in addition to acknowledging cultural diversity and celebrating all we have to offer to our community and society. As youth, we stand as the next generation: future doctors, nurses, poets and journalists, along with all manner of other occupations, and it is through events such as Youth Week that we are truly able to connect with others and establish those bonds that shall enable us to pursue our dreams with confidence and knowledge.
During this year’s youth celebration, from May 1-7, the City of Edmonton will be hosting float fests (ice cream floats and pool floats), sports tournaments, and afternoons dedicated to youth writers, activists and artists, in addition to many more events. However, in spite of the fun that is to be had by all those who attend, speaking as a Youth Week volunteer veteran, there is so much to be gained through helping organize and coordinate Youth Week events. The sense of achievement is unparalleled, and it is one of the greatest feelings when you bear witness to a plethora of smiling faces and know that you helped cause that grin and that burst of laughter. All at once we stand in unison, united by our differences and the acknowledgment of our intrinsic similarities.
