2011 wasn’t an easy year. From economic disasters to natural disasters like the massive earthquake in Japan, we certainly have had our ups and downs. Good and bad, it’s time to reflect on the year 2011.
In world news, one of the biggest stories was the financial crisis, with many people taking protest action in
Occupy movements all across North America.
In 2011, the deaths of some important visionaries made headlines. Steve Jobs, co-creator of Apple, and NDP leader Jack Layton both passed away from cancer.
And it certainly wasn’t a boring year in entertainment news! Charlie Sheen, who was fired from his hit TV show Two and a Half Men, got a lot of attention for his erratic behaviour and made the word “winning” a popular catchphrase.
A couple that was definitely winning this year was Prince William and Catherine Middleton, who got married in royal glory in front of millions of viewers worldwide. But not everybody was winning, especially reality TV star Kim Kardashian, who got married and filed for divorce in a span of 72 days.
The music world had its ups and downs this year too. In July, we lost 27-year-old British soul singer Amy Winehouse, an amazing talent, at far too young an age.
But there were also a lot of positives when it came to music. British songstress Adele won two Grammy awards, released her album 21 and had massive hit singles with Rolling in the Deep and Someone Like You. Unfortunately though, the singer recently had to cancel some of her tour dates due to throat surgery, but she is expected to make a full recovery.
In other celeb news, Beyoncé announced that she and Jay Z are expecting a baby, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez’s relationship heated up and Oprah departed from her legendary talk show to create the OWN network.
On the big screen, we said goodbye to one of the biggest movie franchises of our generation, Harry Potter. Fans of the Twilight saga are also staring down the end of that series as Breaking Dawn, the first part of the last installment, was released in November.
With 2011 filled with so many highs and lows, here’s hoping for a smoother ride in 2012! Read on for our readers’ picks of the biggest and best events, people and things of 2011!
