Not many high-school students can claim to have a remixed track on a major artist’s album, but Mohammed Mannan Ahmed and Moiez Babar, students at Panorama Ridge Secondary and Fleetwood Secondary respectively, in Surrey, BC, can say just that. The two, aged 16 and 17, are thrilled to be one of the 11 winners to win $1000 and nab a spot on K-OS’s fan-remixed version of his latest album, Yes!
“Excited is an understatement. It’s great knowing that we have the official remixes to the two first singles of the album, 4321 and Burning Bridges,” says Ahmed.
The contest was held on indabamusic.com and both Ahmed and Babar, who share a passion for a broad range of music, decided to just go for it. Clearly, these boys aren’t afraid to try something new, nor are they afraid to experiment. “We basically grew up together, when we were younger we were the only ‘brown kids’ listening to punk/rock music. Our taste in music changed as we got older, but we never stopped listening to the old records we listened to. We are really open-minded about any type of music. We might listen to Slipknot one day, and then to George Nozuka the next,” the guys remarked.
Now the creators of The Sound Crate – the site to check out for any of your remixing or deejaying needs – are slowly getting some exposure, and are hoping for a record company contact eventually. “Before the contest was even announced, our original plan was to contact and produce singers and rappers on YouTube,” said Ahmed. “We’re still going to be entering remix contests on indabamusic.com, and anything else that might pop up. This summer especially, we’re going to be perfecting our sound and getting our name out anyway possible. Hopefully we can start recording some local talent as well.”
