Apple Day at MacNeill Secondary

A group of grade 11 girls from MacNeill Secondary had their 2nd annual Apple Event during lunch time on Oct 9th. The girls brainstormed what they could do to make our school an even better place. We wanted to recognize coming back to school, our teachers, the Fall season, healthy snack choices, while contributing to a fun, positive atmosphere. Born was the idea of Apple Day at MacNeill.

As apples are grown locally and are in season, we thought that all our bases would be covered in a simple apple. Remember the cliché "giving your teacher an apple brings good luck?" Some teachers had enough apples given to them, they went home and made a pie. Students were lined up for two lunch times waiting for their apple. The most popular choice was the apple slices with brown sugar and cinnamon sprinkled on top. The girls could hardly keep with the demand as they sliced, peeled and cored the apples (all with an efficient kitchen tool). During the event we had some good tunes over the P.A., and the girls handled the event with enthusiasm proving to their peers that eating healthy is simple and produces a positive effect. They raised $93.60 which they donated to the Terra Nova Schoolyard Project.

This year our group of grade 11 girls will also be having our popular Happy Planet Smoothie Event. They have come up with the idea of baking and selling healthy muffins as well. It is great to see a group of girls working together being leaders in their school and promoting healthy living. These promotions of healthy food choices contribute to healthy living and make us feel great which is an important building block for success!!
