The British Columbia Youth Parliament

Bang on desks, debate, go through question period, meet new people and barely sleep. This past December, that is exactly what ninety-five youth got the opportunity to do for five days. Youth between the ages of 16 and 21 were chosen from all over BC to represent their communities at the 82nd British Columbia Youth Parliament (BCYP) held in Victoria.

During the week, these parliamentarians met in the legislature to debate numerous legislation, as well as “Private Members’ Resolutions,” which allowed the members to debate issues of their own concern. This experience gave participants the opportunity to become better leaders in their communities, as well as the opportunity to become more aware of the parliamentary processes. Despite the countless hours of debating, the youth still formed close relationships with their new-found friends. Between all of the nightly activities, Camp Night, Mixer Night, the Penny Auction and the dance, it was impossible to pick a favourite day. The common rooms at night were a place to share new ideas, debate some more on legislation that had been discussed previously that day and really another place to avoid sleep.

The BCYP is a non-partisan organization run by youth, for youth, hence the motto, “Youth Serving Youth.” Unlike mock parliaments, the results of this organization have real effects on the world, and lead to fundraising efforts and service projects. One of the projects is held each summer, with the help of donations and fundraising. It is a seven-day camp run for socially or financially unstable kids aged eight to twelve.

Surviving on two hours of sleep a night, everyone gave it their all to make this an excellent experience. Every day brought new and exciting activities and debates. I had the privilege of attending this amazing week, and I will never forget it. I am looking forward to the upcoming events and fundraisers, and am proud to say I will definitely be a returning member for the 2011-2012 session. The British Columbia Youth Parliament is a registered charity, constantly looking for new applicants. For more information go to http://www.bcyp.org/
