Fasting for a Good Cause

On April 29, 2009 the grade 8 and 9 students of Colonel Macleod School in Calgary took a pledge to help World Vision fundraise for the kids in Africa. Since many of these African children and their families struggle to survive every day, Colonel Macleod helped collect money for the organization and took part in World Vision's annual 30 Hour Famine.

The students started their fast at 5:30 am on April 29th and concluded it by 11:30 am on April 30th, consuming only liquids such as juice and water during that time period. It was a high-spirited day at the school despite everyone’s hunger, as the entire school, including teachers, participated in this noble cause. Students had high individual goals of raising a certain amount of money, and many accomplished it with great success. From $10 to $400, everyone had something to donate, making this activity a triumph for the Cougars.

Due to the high accomplishment rate, the proud teachers organized a Thank you Lunch for all the participants. This event was managed by a small group of leadership students and was very well organized. The main intention behind this thought was to help create awareness among students. We need to believe that at our young age, we too can be productive members of society and make a difference in the world we live in today. It is really great that many other schools across the country took part in this event too and helped their students gain knowledge about different issues such as poverty, hunger and child labour. I would like to congratulate every one who participated in the program and had great success and a beneficial learning experience.

Fasting for a good cause!

Pooja,

April 29th will be remembered by me. Indeed a great cause. My prayers and best wishes for you to be a part of such a cause. True, we all can make it happen.

Well written and presented.
