Greatness is not always appreciated until it’s missing. Two-hundred Maple Ridge Secondary School students didn't know just how great our band teacher, Jennifer Hansen, was until now. Most of us assumed that awards, great trips and, best of all, consistently fun classes were standard in all music departments.
Miss Hansen was adored by her students. She ensured that her students performed at their best. In class, she always had creative, fun contests using arpeggios and rhythms and a lot of sight-reading to keep us engaged. Classes were a blast! She deserved and received respect.
Until October 2010, Miss Hansen had been teaching band at MRSS for eight years. In addition, she also taught a band program for local elementary schools.
I was fortunate to have her as my band teacher since grade six. For three years, she encouraged and challenged me to practice hard and to think for myself musically through composition.
She is on maternity leave this year. Her replacement is nice and works hard, but nevertheless, I can’t wait for Miss Hansen to return!
