On September 30th, Henry Wise Wood High School in Calgary participated in one of its seasonal pep rallies in the main auditorium. To show their school spirit and manliness, a couple of guys from the Wise Wood Warriors football teams signed up to have their legs shaved or waxed in hopes of raising some money for the Terry Fox Foundation.
Students in the school watched as their school spirit shone through layers of wax and shaving cream. The crowd cheered and screamed for the willing players and the Wise Wood dance team received the duty of applying the cream and wax and liberating the hair from the legs of the Warriors. Maximus, the spirited mascot, showed his support with eager dance moves. Also providing even more entertainment and support was a great school band playing familiar favourites with accuracy and creativity.
During the shaving, a few members of the student council maneuvered through the watching crowd collecting coins and bills for the Terry Fox Foundation. The school has been able to raise over $3,000 since students began participating in this particular fundraiser about three years ago.
Many students were willing to reach into their wallets to help out the cause this year. Meanwhile, many of the football players went home with sleek, hair-free legs and a great feeling of pride for helping with the fundraiser and letting the school see their school spirit. The pep rally was a success and hopefully just the first of many this school year at Henry Wise Wood.
