The Lengths People Go to for Designer

It’s happened to everyone; the moment when you see that gorgeous garment and want nothing but it. Whether it be a purse, shoes or dress everyone has had that moment where they’ve fallen in love with something only to have their heart broken when they see the price tag.

Now, most people accept the fact that they can’t afford the $1,500 Louis Vuitton purse, or the pair of $800 Jimmy Choos, but some people, some people will do anything to get these items. These consumers will go to extreme lengths to have that status symbol hanging from their arm, and for what? To bring it to English class?

Here are the lengths to which some people will go for designer duds!

Purse Rentals:
The founders of Bag, Borrow, or Steal are truly brilliant. They really know how to draw in business in our overly materialistic society. With everyone craving these largely overrated labels, and more often than not being able to afford the item outright without some sort of payment plan, the purse rental business made it big. As a member of Bag Borrow or Steal customers have full access to all purses, you can rent the purse for a month, for as low as $25 or a week for as low as $6. The prices range depending on the designer you would like with a top price point of about $500 a month. $500 a month? Isn’t that what some people pay for rent?

Craigslist:
So, you heard about that huge sale, but missed out on it, like the Jimmy Choo line for H&M? Well, just because you missed it most certainly doesn’t mean someone else did. People are now putting themselves out there and lining up for these sales for ridiculous hours, purchasing the items and reselling them through places like Craigslist for more than double the price. The sad thing about this is that label-lovers are buying them.

Midnight Madness, Black Friday, Boxing Day:
We all know what Boxing Day is like here in Canada. It’s a long day with long line-ups where we spend all our Christmas money and gift cards; however, did you know that in the States there is a shopping event very similar to Boxing Day, but crazier? Black Friday or Midnight Madness is the shopping event that takes place after Thanksgiving in the States. Stores open up at midnight with massive sales – and line-ups. The lengths these people go to? Well, last year in NYC, three people were killed at the midnight opening of Wal-Mart, trampled by the massive amounts of rushing shoppers trying to get their discounted merchandise.

Line-Ups:
The worst part of any good sale is the wretched line up. The line-ups some people will stand in for a pair of designer heels is quite absurd. We’re talking about lining up outside the store for up to 15 hours, then again inside to purchase the items. In some cases, customers have lined up outside stores for days, even in poor weather conditions. It truly is crazy, but at the end of the day, they got the items they wanted, and to them, that’s all that matters!

Working, Saving, Spending:
Being a teen, I work – a lot actually, and even though I don’t pay rent, I always find myself very low on money. However, I’m by no means spending it on clothes. Some designer-cravers spend whole paycheques on one item. I personally know a girl who worked all summer just to buy a $2,500 Louis Vuitton purse. Now, if you’re going to ask me, I find that completely insane, probably because that is the same price I paid for my car that I also worked for all summer.

I have seen many articles of clothing at, what you would call, "cheap stores" that almost exactly resemble the brand name clothes. I find myself asking the question of "Why spend your money on a $150 pair or jeans, when you can get similar ones for $30?" And giving myself the answer of "because, one, someone will be sure to point out that you bought the knock-offs and two, obviously, since it's more expensive the quality has to be better."
In the end, I compared the knock-off with the real deal and although the quality of the brand name was a teeny-tiny bit better, it was NOT worth the extra $120. Think before you buy!

Designer items are an

Designer items are an indulgence for teenage girls and many are willing to go to different extremes to get a certain article of clothing or pair of the newest shoes like you've pointed out. The thing is though, while many don't realize it, soon, there's a new pair of "must-have" shoes and the whole cycle starts all over again. It makes you think, "when will it stop?"

another length people go to...

People who can't afford to purchase designer brands also settle for fake purses that resemble the authentic ones. I know many people in China sell fake brands for very cheap prices, and I'm sure they make pretty good business, because everyone wants to get their hands on a designer purse, whether or not it's real.

Yes, that is true.

Yes, that is true.
