Sound Off: Money Sucking Technology

Will advancements in technology ever slow down?

You will never catch me saying technology is a bad thing. Without advances in technology, we’d be nowhere – I’d have a hard time finishing every report, essay or paper I’ve ever had to write without Google.

But seriously, enough is enough. How long do we have to wait for the constant releasing of the newest iPhone, iTouch, iPad and Blackberry to end, so we can finally have the latest phone, tablet or iTouch? It’s like every two months the latest version or upgrade comes out, and we barely have time to blink before the latest becomes “so yesterday.”

Let me give you an example of a pointless upgrade: the iPad 2. It seems the only reason it came out is because Apple wanted to hold its competitors back. But really, what’s so great about this new version? It’s slimmer and lighter and it has a camera. Hmmm I wonder what else this reminds me of. Oh right, the iTouch 3G.

These companies keep bringing out better gadgets for us to play with - better, but not the best. Why? Because if they gave us the best, then what would they top the best with? Nothing! And that's not good for business.

So what do they do instead? It seems like they keep advancing their products, but just enough, so they have something to put into the next model. We already have the iPhone 4, and the iPhone 5 is said to come out next summer… so where will it end? What comes after the iPhone 5 – is it the iPhone 6, 7, 10, 20, 30… 65?

I’d say it’s time to put our wallets away and our thinking caps on. If the next iPhone model is only a few grams lighter, do you really need to buy it?
