Sound Off: Don’t Trick Yourself Into Thinking It’s a Treat

With Halloween just around the corner, many of you are probably already deciding on your Halloween costumes and making plans to go out. Perhaps your plans include stopping at a couple of houses and asking for candy? But before you decide to trick-or-treat, consider the reality of this fun mythical night.

Halloween traditions have changed radically over time. When our grandparents and parents were young, they spent time creating their costumes from scratch. This made their costumes original – and they had fun preparing them (or so I hear). When they went out, they would carry pillowcases as bags, and by the time their night concluded, their sacks would be filled with apples and homemade treats.
Today, we spend our part-time-job paycheques purchasing a costume that other people will also be wearing. We fill store-bought Halloween-themed treat bags with store-bought candy and intoxicate our bodies with sugar, transfats, artificial flavours and colours and chemical preservatives.

Not only has our generation become unimaginative, uncreative and thoughtless in our approach to Halloween, but we’re also known for being overweight and dependent on sweets and caffeine! So before you go out this Halloween, consider cutting back on even just one street to decrease the overall amount of junk you’ll put in your body. Or why not go back to the good ol’ days and try making your own unique costume, or set up your own Halloween games like bobbing for apples – nutritious, delicious and fun!
