Rifling through your parents’ old clothes has never been so exciting because for summer 2009, the vintage look is all the rage. With the increasing temperatures, you’ll need something light and stylish, so why not recycle while you’re at it and go vintage? It’s difficult to know where to start, so just get a hold of these four vintage essentials, and you’ll be set for summer.
The Light Windbreaker
Back in the 1970s and ‘80s, this light, colourful jacket was just being introduced. Now, almost thirty-five years later, it’s an essential to keeping cool and stylish this summer. They’re easy to find as well, simply check out any vintage retail store near you and you can be looking refined in no time.
Levi’s 501 Cut-offs
If you’re looking for versatility and that classic denim appearance but don’t want to be wearing those hot and heavy jeans, try a pair of shorts. Vintage Levi’s 501 are cut-off just above the knee and are inspired by the awesome ‘80s fashion that works for modern-day styles. They go with basically anything and can be found in multiple washes. Their comfort is guaranteed and the fit will be excellent; they have made it through 25 years of wear!
Plaid Short-sleeved Western shirt
For a great look that’s breathable and also colourful, a short-sleeved plaid western is definitely for you. The great thing with them being vintage, is that you can be reassured that your friend won’t have the same one. They come in practically any color plaid, short-sleeved and easy-open snaps rather than buttons; what could compare?
Boat and Plimsoll Shoes
To complete the entire look without worrying about those old leather or canvas shoes ripping on you, try a boat or plimsoll shoe (canvas upper, rubber sole). With shoes you probably have to buy new, but these are affordable and still have that vintage appearance that’s all the rage. A simple white pair of Keds goes a long way and works with absolutely anything. A Sperry boat shoe is an excellent option too and also allows your feet some air for those hot summer days.
Be in style this summer and help the environment at the same time. Go vintage pay homage to those wonderful stylists that created these looks so many years ago.
