3D or not 3D? That is the Question

With the recent success of 3D blockbusters like Avatar, Alice in Wonderland and the buzz of the upcoming Clash of the Titans, it isn’t surprising to find that 3D home television sets will soon be hitting the market allowing movie-lovers to enjoy these films from the comfort of their own homes.

Toshiba, Sony and other technology manufacturing companies have all introduced 3D capable TV models that are expected to hit the market sometime in 2010. The 3D TVs will, of course, be 2D capable as well. And for all you sports fans out there, ESPN has announced that on June 11th 2010 they will release a strictly 3D sports network that will broadcast up to 85 live events a year, making a 3D TV much more enticing. So why wouldn’t you want one?

When these televisions hit the shelves, the TV’s themselves will selling for a minimum of about $3,000 and up to who knows how much. However the TVs alone will not give you the 3D experience; you will need to purchase special 3D glasses as well. At the time of purchase, some TVs will come with a pair of glasses, but if you have plans to share this visual experience with a couple of friends or your family, expect to pay a minimum of $100 per pair of glasses.

So will 3D TVs live up to the hype or fall into the bin of failed technology? These TVs are new, exciting and will raise the bar in home entertainment, but like any new product, there will also be some bugs and kinks to work out.

So keep that in mind before you agree to pay a steep price for this new technology.
