Chances are when you turn on the tap, you’re not even thinking about where that water came from or where it ends up, and you’re probably taking for granted that you have easy access to this sanitary water. It’s time to stop taking advantage of our H2O, so here are seven ways you can save water – not to mention cash – in your home.
1. Turn the water off when you brush your teeth, shave or wash your hands. Consider this: Do you really need the water on at full blast when you’re brushing your teeth or is it just a habit?
2. Do you have leftover water from rinsing vegetables? Before you pour it down the drain, think, “What can I do with this used water?” How about using it to wash your car or water potted plants.
3. Run only full loads of laundry. According to blueegg.com (an eco website), some 40 gallons of water are used to wash a load of clothes when using a standard washer, so make every load count.
4. Build your own water harvester! 1.) Find an empty pail or ice cream bucket 2.) Place this anywhere in your garden 3.) After a storm, collect the rainwater and use it to water your garden.
5. Fix any leaky faucets. Even a faucet with a slow drip can leak seven or more gallons a day according to blueegg.com. A drop may not sound like much, but it adds up.
6. Store drinking water in the fridge instead of letting the water run every time you need a cool drink of water.
7. Take shorter showers. Even a 15-minute shower is equivalent to a whole bathtub-full of water. Bottom line, it’s not in anybody’s best interests for you to stay in the shower longer just so that you can sing!
