When first approached with the term “philanthropy,†I must admit, my mind drew a blank. It’s a broad term, but it’s commonly described as giving money away for a good cause. As teenagers, you might think that the notion of giving away money is absurd – after all, we aren’t really drowning in it ourselves, are we? But it’s possible, and from my own experiences, fun, really.
I currently work with the Calgary Youth Foundation. As a youth-driven philanthropic organization, the Calgary Youth Foundation has two grant-giving cycles per year, distributing up to $10,000 for youth-driven events around the city. Erin Courtice, a youth foundation member, says, “Our philosophy is to support youth-driven initiatives. Nothing makes me happier than seeing the money we grant go towards something beneficial, and youth benefiting from learning about philanthropy.â€Â
This year, National Philanthropy Day falls on November 15th. It’s an optimal time to learn what philanthropy is about, through various events and forums.
In Calgary, the National Philanthropy Day Youth Forum will be held November 18th at SAIT. Up to 80 students will have the opportunity to register and participate in workshops and activities to teach what philanthropy is all about. Meanwhile, Edmontonians can look forward to various luncheons, with the opportunity to speak to various local philanthropists, while awards are given out to youth and adults demonstrating philanthropic qualities.
