Is the iPad Really Worth Your Money?

Apple’s iPad was launched on January 27th, 2010 and will arrive in Canada on Friday, May 28th, 2010. Although CEO Steve Jobs announced that it would be a “revolutionary and magical product,” some closer observations into what the iPad offers has made critics question: is the iPad really as revolutionary as Apple would have us think? Let's take a closer look at the advantages and disadvantages of Apple's latest creation.

Advantages

Sleek design
Apple is well-known for its products’ polished designs, and the iPad is no exception. With a weight of 1.5 pounds and a width of 0.5 inches, the iPad is a marvel that can be easily carried and handled.

Large screen
This tablet has a 9.7 inch display screen, making it easy on a viewer’s eyes.

Long battery life

The iPad boasts a 10-hour battery life, longer than its other tablet competitors.

Runs Apple Applications
The iPad can run applications from Apple’s App Store, allowing for convenience and quick entertainment at your fingerprints.

Disadvantages

Its Name
Several critics have already made maxi-pad references.

No Camera
The fact that there is no front-facing OR back-facing camera is almost unspeakable. Without a camera, users lose out on methods of communication and entertainment, such as taking photos or participating in video chats with long-distance family members or friends.

No Multi-Tasking
The fact that you cannot run multiple applications at the same time makes the iPad extremely inefficient, especially now that we are in the 21st century.

No Flash
Users will not be able to watch web videos or play web games.

No HDMI Output
Unlike other convenient laptops, you cannot plug the iPad into the television.

No USB Port
The fact that the iPad has no USB port means that you will have to purchase additional adapters if you want to plug in additional devices (printer, keyboard… etc.)

Touch Keyboard
The touch keyboard on this tablet forces you to have to type in an uncomfortable and awkward position. Luckily, Apple has already thought of a solution: the company is selling an external keyboard dock.

Computers, laptops, iPods

Computers, laptops, iPods and now iPads! When will the madness stop? The iPad is just another new fad that will be easily forgotten when Apple creates its next big thing. To me, the iPad has way more disadvantages than advantages and would be a waste of money. The advantages listed above are all based on appearance and nothing about how it is runs. It can't multitask, it doesn't have a camera and it doesn't have ANY USB ports therefore you would have to spend more money and buy specific adapters. So in the end the iPad is not for me.

The iPad is an "in-between"

The iPad is an "in-between" gadget that will be highly redundant for most teenagers. A vast majority of teens already own some sort of iPod, and many have their own laptops. An iPad is simply a larger version of an iPod touch, and a lesser version of an iPhone. The touch keys on Apple devices are difficult to use; typos are inevitable. You cannot connect USBs or anything similar devices to an iPad, and it would be difficult to transfer data on and off of it.

Apple sells more than 300,000 iPads on first day

By Luke Moon - Magee Secondary School, Vancouver BC

One technology analyst has mentioned that Apple did a good job on the first day of selling the iPad - more than 300,000 sold! However, another analyst has come out saying the numbers actually aren't that high. Personally, I think that our society is already overwhelmed with the number of electronic toys we “need.” The iPad doesn’t have a camera, so no web chats; there isn’t any flash to stream better quality videos, no USB hub to connect other devices, and countless other shortcomings. So now, 300,000 people have another fancy new digital device, which they have to combine with their other countless digital devices in order to do anything. We shouldn’t have to feel compelled to have a computer attached to ourselves in order to live.

No Thanks

I'll stick to a regular laptop, thank you very much. This computer would be such a hassle to deal with. You can't even word process normally unless you buy the external keyboard! So let's face it, how many people are really going to buy this computer when you have to pay extra just to type?

Not worth it

The thing is ridiculous, it's way too expensive and it's really just an Ipod touch with a severe growth defection. Just because they are a very successful company, doesn't mean that they can just sell everything and get away with it.

I never bothered to check

I never bothered to check what the iPad was until now...I don't even understand the point of it, honestly. Run apps and play music?

This is the first version of

This is the first version of the iPad. I bet anything with time Apple will fix all the little glitches. Plus right now no way I am paying that much for it. I'll wait

iPad

Nope and I don't even own an iPhone or iPod Touch.

Wow...

Apple's expecting too much. Just because you're one of the top bestsellers, it doesn't mean people will want to buy EVERYthing you dish out regardless if it's worth it or not.
