It’s no surprise that our generation is the generation of growing cancer populations, brain tumours and obesity rates, seeing how many teens would rather spend two hours watching Ellen than exercise for 30 minutes. We’ve lived long enough on this planet to know that technology just can’t be a substitute for a good workout (note to game addicts who insist that Wii Fit is exercise: get a life).
Perhaps you used the coldness of winter as an excuse not to exercise, but seriously, hibernation’s over now, so wake up and taste the sunshine. Why not make health and fitness a priority this spring break?
I can now proudly say that an outdoor run for 30 minutes will go a long way. I recall one evening after sporadic attempts at math homework, I declared defeat and decided to go for a jog. When I stepped back through the front door again, I felt the answer to that math question click into place.
Now there were several unexpected realizations and benefits as a result of this run: first, I wasn’t a pro-athlete; second, this run became a routine I now follow; and third, I’ve come to know more of my surprisingly unique neighbours. And this all came about from just deciding to go for a jog because of a frustrating math problem.
Spring also offers more than just the opportunity to jog outdoors! Neighbourhood biking, sidewalk skipping, street hockey or even a walk in the park will perk up your body more than your much-practiced suntanning pose on the sofa. Consider it a chance to vent your stress, socialize and admire nature.
Thanks to some healthy exercising, you’ll return feeling energized, fit and motivated to do it all again the next day.
